When prospects are coming up through the minors and lighting up the lower levels, it’s easy to dream on the upside: “This batter is going to have several 40-40 seasons”; “This pitcher will anchor the rotation”’; “This hitter will be in the mix for annual batting titles.” Because of that upside, teams are often reluctant to trade prospects for stars in the manner that the Padres did when they sent the Nationals three players who began the year in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, and another who is in the midseason Top 100....

Things got started Sunday with the first big-name player moved when the Blue Jays sent Marcus Stroman to the Mets. It’s got only crazier from there as the Astros landed starting pitcher Zack Greinke from the Diamondbacks. Other big names on the move included Shane Greene from the Tigers to the Braves, Tanner Roark from the Reds to the Athletics and Nick Castellanos from the Tigers to the Cubs....

The Nationals third baseman hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to put his team ahead of the Braves for good. Washington went on to beat Atlanta, 6-3. Juan Soto and Trea Turner also brought in runs as the Nationals moved to 57-49 and 4 1/2 games behind the National League East-leading Braves. Atlanta tried to chip away at its deficit with a run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Washington....

The Nationals topped the Phillies 4-1 before beating them 6-5 later on in the day. Washington wasn’t great offensively in the first matchup, but Anthony Rendon brought in two of the team’s four runs with two sacrifice flies. He leads MLB in RBIs with a total of 124 in 2019. Philadelphia was more competitive in the second game and got two home runs and four RBIs from Brad Miller....

State police say Jose Rivero of White Plains unlawfully took more than $14,000 in benefits. He was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with two felonies including insurance fraud. The police said they did not know if the 33-year-old Rivero had a lawyer. There was no phone listing for Rivero in White Plains. The Professional Referees Organization, which supervises referees for Major League Soccer and other soccer leagues, said Rivero had been suspended....

A brace from Jozy Altidore helped Eastern Conference leader Toronto to a 4-0 win at home to the San Jose Earthquakes. The win was Toronto’s fifth straight, and Greg Vanney’s men are now assured of a spot in the playoffs. Victor Vazquez opened the scoring for Toronto in the first half before his pass put Altidore through, the United States international making no mistake with his finish for his 50th MLS goal....

A former All-American goalkeeper at Maryland, and one of the stars of the U.S. Under-20 World Cup team’s run to the quarterfinals in 2015, Steffen had all the qualities to make scouts drool. He had the size, the cat-like reflexes, the aggressiveness. When he left college early to sign with German club Freiburg, the hope was that European soccer’s talent factory would forge him into a challenger for a national team role sooner than later....

With clubs from around the region in two pots, the clear danger for most MLS teams was the chance of being drawn against Costa Rican giants Saprissa or Herediano. The Costa Rican sides will instead face Mexican teams, with MLS clubs largely coming away content with their round of 16 opponents. Herediano will play against recently crowned Liga MX champion Tigres, who also won the 2016 Apertura. The teams will remember each other from last year’s edition of the competition when they were in the same group, which Tigres advanced out of after losing just once....

As is custom with the All-Star Game roster, there are some swings and misses: Mike Trout makes the All-Star Game this year despite playing in just 36 games in the first half and is nursing a calf injury. Juan Soto hit a double off the roof of Tokyo Dome in the third inning that scored Yadier Molina from second to give the MLB team a 4-0 lead. Realmuto then doubled in a run and Rosario added two more on a single as the MLB squad scored five runs in the inning to take a 7-0 lead. Realmuto also hit an opposite-field solo homer in the fifth to make it 8-3....

MLB Now recently released a list of their top 10 third basemen and it has created quite a stir. Fans took to Twitter to give their thoughts on who warrants a place on this very competitive list. MLB is stacked with talented third basemen, and not everyone can squeeze into the top 10. The tweet, from the MLB Network account, had fans questioning the order and ranking of some of the players....

They just reached a one-year deal to avoid arbitration, but a long-term deal remains in question. The Red Sox would like to keep their star, but it will cost them a lot of money to do so. Jon Heyman tweeted: Players like Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Aaron Judge and former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts have received around $300 million contracts. So something much larger for Devers is certainly possible....

All right, truth time. How many people had the Twins (29-19) only a half-game back in the AL Central, ahead of the Tigers (2.5 games) and in playoff contention after the first two months of the season? We’re guessing not many, barring the loyal fans in the Twin Cities. It’s an exciting time for Minnesota baseball, because the Twins also have two of the top five prospects in outfielder Byron Buxton and third baseman Miguel Sano, so this could be the start of things to come in a new era of great Twins baseball....

All the 22-year-old right-hander did to change perception with Seattle was dominate the Cactus League, where he went 4-0 in seven starts with a 0.67 ERA. He struck out 26 batters in 27 innings and opposing batters hit only .114 against him.
