Hours after the Arizona Diamondbacks opened camp, they signed the free-agent right-hander to a two-year contract, according to Fox Sports. So far this offseason, baseball fans have been treated to several high-profile trades, with more expected to come. The headline-stealing trade saw Daulton Varsho being moved to the Toronto Blue Jays from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona received Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the trade. While trade rumors surrounded Daulton Varsho, the deal that saw Teoscar Hernandez traded from the Blue Jays to the Seattle Mariners was less expected....

THE RUMOR: The Phillies are talking to the Blue Jays about a Jonathan Papelbon trade REPORTED BY: Todd Zolecki, MLB.com. MORE: New faces in new places | Brewers eye K-Rod after Papelbon pursuit stalls | Rox say Tulo, CarGo likely staying put THE DETAILS: Papelbon is owed $13 million in 2015 and has a $13 million vesting option for 2016 should he finish 48 games. With the Phillies in rebuilding mode, they would need to pay much of Papelbon’s salary and get the player to waive his no-trade clause if they were serious about a deal....

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS 80 (63-95): This UNDER has been in for a while with little drama other than them playing the required 162 regular season games. ATLANTA BRAVES 87.5 (76-81): They have unraveled mightily to the proportions that the Mets are tied with them for second-place in the NL East. They were even-money to win the division, along with the Nationals, before the season started. BALTIMORE ORIOLES 78 (94-63): One of the easiest winners on the board....

Business was conducted, news was broken, players were signed when MLB front offices, players and agents all met in sunny San Diego for this year’s baseball Winter Meetings, from Sunday, Dec. 4, to Wednesday, Dec. 7. This offseason, the majority of eyes were set on MLB’s literal and figurative biggest free agent, outfielder Aaron Judge. The AL home run king ultimately re-signed with the Yankees on a monster nine-year, $360 million contract that should keep him in pinstripes for the remainder of his career....

New York completed a sweep of the White Sox with a 4-0 victory in Chicago on Thursday. In the process, the Mets extended their winning streak to seven. Zack Wheeler shut down Chicago en route to the win. He threw seven scoreless innings and allowed just four hits while striking out seven. Wheeler had been at the center of trade rumors for most of July, but ultimately ended up remaining with New York after no deal was reached before the deadline....

Cincinnati was already up 4-0 before a Jesse Winker single to right field and a Miami error plated two runs. Next came the home runs. First, Matt Kemp. Then, Eugenio Suárez. Finally, Scott Schebler, who extended the lead to 11-0. Kyle Farmer added a three-run homer in the seventh. All in all, it was a very good night for the previously struggling Reds. It was a landmark occasion for MLS’ newest team LAFC on Sunday – the expansion franchise marking its inaugural game with a 1-0 victory at CenturyLink Field. There are plenty of big names associated with LAFC, a club co-owned by NBA Hall of Famer and Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson. Hollywood star Will Ferrell is also part of the ownership team and he was in attendance as LAFC left Seattle with all three points thanks to Diego Rossi’s early strike, the fastest ever scored by an expansion side in their first outing....

Still, there are four other clubs all within a point of the East leaders as parity reigns in the U.S. domestic league. In the West, it’s the same story, as LAFC slipped on the road at the Colorado Rapids, and two of the other top three teams lost last time out as well, seeing the likes of FC Dallas jump to second in the table. The top of the Western Conference doesn’t have the same logjam as the East, but there are still five teams within four points of the leaders and the early playoff race is anybody’s game....

This wasn’t surprising, of course, but it is disheartening. Commissioner Rob Manfred promised during his post-owners meetings news conference on Thursday, “It’s a good proposal.” Apparently even the definition of the word “good” is disputed by the two sides. Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to officially report later this week, but with the clubhouse doors still locked — literally, not just figuratively — and the sides far, far apart on a potential agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, that’s not going to happen....

Sho Darvish was arrested in October after being accused by authorities of taking bets on American and Japanese sports. He and seven others were accused of taking 18.5 million yen, or $150,000, worth of bets based on the scores of 16 MLB games and 28 Japanese professional baseball games from May 12-18. The Cardinals (7-3) have feasted on the Reds (5-6) in April over the past five seasons, going 16-6, including 4-1 this season, which is part of the reason the Cardinals are big -180 favorites tonight. But the major reason for the high number rests with Wainwright facing Reds’ right-hander Mike Leake. MLB odds: Current lines from Las Vegas The Reds avoided Wainwright’s turn in the rotation during last weekend’s series at Cincinnati, but when he takes the mound today, he’ll be riding a 17-inning shutout streak against the Reds dating back to 2013....

It’s been a rough time for Oakland as they’ve gone 14-28 since having a four-game lead in the AL West on Aug. 9, and while Texas should be a team the A’s can use as a slump-buster, it’s been Texas that has turned things around by winning 11 of its last 12 games, including a sweep over the A’s in Oakland last week. In that series, Oakland was outscored 19-6....
